How You Can Help
Dear Dr. Beaver:
I am deeply disappointed that the American Veterinary Medical Association endorses the cruel and inhumane factory-farming practice of confining pregnant sows to gestation crates and that you lack a humane animal-welfare position regarding the use of ducks and geese to produce foie gras.
Sow gestation crates have been banned in the European Union, the state of Florida, and elsewhere around the world because they are cruel and inhumane. What is cruel in Europe is cruel in America. Similarly, foie gras production is illegal in many countries, including Israel, Germany, Poland, South Africa, and elsewhere because of the obvious cruelty involved in ramming a tube down a bird’s throat and force-feeding the animal to induce liver disease.
As someone whose life is dedicated to improving and enriching the lives of animals, you will surely agree that every animal, whether a dog, a pig, a cat, or a goose, deserves basic humane treatment.
I ask that you please use your role as president of the American Veterinary Medical Association to expedite the removal of the AVMA’s anti-animal welfare endorsement for gestation crates and include a strong statement against the production of foie gras. Endorsing obviously cruel practices at the urging of industry representatives who profit from them damages the otherwise fine reputation of the AVMA.
Yours sincerely,
